Over thirty years ago, driven by an interest in human health and the environment, Guelph-based farmer John Rowe began to raise beef cattle without the use of growth promotants, antibiotics and animal based feeds. Eventually he teamed up with other local farmers who were attracted to a more natural way of raising animals, and in 1973 he started a company called Rowe Farm Meats to market their products. Thirty years later the company has become the largest producer of natural meat in the Ontario, selling beef, chicken and pork, as well as eggs. Driven by success at the company’s own retail outlets in Guelph and Fergus, Ontario, as well as success at farmers’ markets like Toronto’s St. Lawrence Market and supermarkets such as Whole Foods and Fortinos, Rowe Farm Meats has developed a strong following amongst discerning meat buyers.
